Putting It All Together

Let us put all our clues together. You have worked hard on this path. You learned about the visible spectrum. You learned the rainbow color order. Now we will connect all these ideas.
We learned many secrets about the sky. The sun sends us bright white light. This white light holds every rainbow color.
Our planet wears a thick blanket of air. We call this blanket the atmosphere. This air is full of tiny gas molecules. Light must travel through this air. Light travels in waves.
The Blue Sky of Day
In the middle of the day, the sun sits high. Sunlight takes a short trip to your eyes. The light hits the gas molecules.
Blue light waves are very short. They act like tiny bumper cars. They crash into the air molecules. They bounce all over the sky .
Lord Rayleigh was a smart scientist. He lived a long time ago. He figured out how light bounces . He gave his name to this rule. Scientists call this Rayleigh scattering .
The blue light scatters everywhere. You look up and see a blue sky.
