Dust and Clouds

The sky is full of invisible gases. We learned about nitrogen and oxygen before. But the air holds other things too.
It holds tiny pieces of dirt. We call this dirt dust. Dust can be made of sand or dry dirt.
The air also holds water drops. These drops make up clouds. These extra pieces change how the sky looks.
They change the colors of the sunset. Let us find out how.
Big Bumps in the Sky
Gas molecules are very tiny. Dust pieces are much bigger. Water drops are the biggest of all.
Think of an obstacle course. Light waves zoom through the air. They crash into these different obstacles.
Light hits the tiny gases. This is called Rayleigh scattering.
In plain words: light bounces off tiny air parts. This makes the day blue. It makes the evening red.
But what happens to bigger dust? The light bounces in a new way. Dust scatters the red and yellow light waves.
This mixes the colors together. A dusty sky makes a sunset look pink. Sometimes it even looks purple!
Dust Travels the World
Dust does not stay in one place. Wind blows dry dirt high into the sky. The wind pushes the dust very far.
It can cross the whole ocean. Pollution travels this way too. Factories make smoke and dirty dust.
Scientists tested clean snow in Alaska. They found factory dust inside the snow! This dust traveled all the way from Asia .
Dust is not always bad. In fact, dust helps plants grow. Plants need food to live.

The total dust dropped by ten percent . Most of this dust comes from dry places. North Africa has a huge desert.
Asia has big deserts too. Both places send less dust into the air now . Less dust means our sunsets might look a little clearer.
Volcanoes Make Big Colors
Sometimes the earth makes a huge amount of dust. A volcano can erupt. It shoots ash high into the sky.
Ash is a type of sharp rock dust. The volcano shoots ash very high. The ash mixes with the clouds.
This ash stays in the air for months. It travels all around the globe. The ash blocks some of the sunlight.
But it also makes sunsets look amazing. The thick ash scatters the light waves. A volcano erupts. Then people see bright purple sunsets.
Clouds Act Like Screens
Clouds also change our evening sky. Clouds are made of water drops. These drops are much bigger than dust.
Think about a movie theater. The projector shoots light across the room. The empty air does not show the movie.
The light needs to hit the white screen. Clouds work just like that movie screen. The setting sun shoots red light across the sky.
The empty air does not show the colors well. But the clouds catch the light. The water drops reflect the colors down to your eyes.
Different clouds make different colors. High clouds catch the last rays of the sun. They glow bright pink.
Low clouds might look dark and gray. They block the light instead of catching it. A completely clear sky gives a plain sunset.
You just see a red sun. But a cloudy sky gives a beautiful light show. The clouds spread the colors everywhere.
