Flying Back Home

The honeybee finishes her job at the flower. She drank the sweet liquid from the flower nectary. Now her honey stomach is full. She must bring this food back to her family. Soon, she will start passing the nectar to other bees at the hive. But first, she must find her way home.
The hive might be three miles away. The bee is very small. The world is very big. How does she know where to go? She uses special tricks to find her way. She is a master explorer. Let us look at how she travels.
A honeybee uses three main tools to navigate:
- Her large eyes to see landmarks.
- Her smart brain to track her path.
- Her special body to feel magnets.
Looking at Landmarks
Honeybees have great eyes. They look at the world around them. They memorize big objects on their trip. We call these objects landmarks.
A landmark can be a tall oak tree. It can be a bright red barn. It can be a shiny blue car. You use landmarks too. You might turn left at a big rock to walk home. Bees do the exact same thing.
Bees look closely at the outside of objects. They notice the colors and edges. They also notice the texture. Texture means how bumpy or smooth something is. A brick wall has a rough texture. A glass window has a smooth texture.
We show that landmark texture is a feature that bees memorize, and being given the opportunity to identify landmarks by their texture improves the bees' navigational performance.
In plain words: bees remember how things look and feel. A bumpy tree helps them find their way better than a smooth pole. They use these rough and smooth memories to fly straight home .
Keeping Track of the Path
Bees also have a map in their head. They keep track of their whole flight. They know exactly how far they fly. They know exactly which way they turn.
Think about playing a game blindfolded. You count your steps in the yard. You take ten steps forward. You take five steps right. You know exactly where you are. Bees do this in the sky!
Scientists call this path integration. The bee adds up all her turns. She adds up her total distance. Then she knows the exact straight line back home. She does not need to retrace every single turn.
This bee trick is very smart. Scientists even build tiny flying robots to copy it . They made a robot strategy called "Bee-Nav." The robot uses a small computer brain. It flies far away and comes straight back. It uses the exact same math as our busy honeybees . This helps robots save battery power.
Tiny Flying Magnets
Bees have one more amazing trick. They can feel the earth. The earth acts like a giant magnet. It has a north pole and a south pole.
You might have a toy compass. A compass needle always points north. It uses the earth's magnetic pull. Bees do not need a toy compass. They have a built-in compass inside their bodies!
Scientists think bees are like tiny flying magnets . They can feel the invisible magnetic lines in the air. This helps them know which direction is north. It helps them know which direction is south.
They use this magnetic sense on cloudy days. Sometimes the sun is hidden behind dark clouds. Sometimes the landmarks are hard to see. The magnetic pull always guides them safely home .
When Bees Get Lost
Usually, bees are great flyers. They almost always find their way back. But sometimes they get lost.
Farmers sometimes spray chemicals on plants. These chemicals stop bad bugs from eating crops. We call these sprays pesticides. Some pesticides are very bad for honeybees.
One bad type is called a neonicotinoid. This is a big word. It means a special bug spray. This spray hurts the bee's brain. It acts like poison to their memory.
Scientists did a test with these sprays. They caught bees and put tiny radars on them . They moved the bees far away. Then they watched the bees try to fly home.
The bees with the bug spray got confused. They forgot their mental maps. They could not remember their landmarks . They flew in the wrong direction. Many could not find their hive.
This is why we must protect bees. We need to keep their flowers safe from bad sprays. A healthy bee has a sharp memory. She uses her eyes, her math, and her magnets. She flies back safely. Then she can start making honey in the honeycomb cells.
