The Ethics of Naming

When the city of Mumbai officially changed its name from Bombay in 1995, the shift triggered deep debates about historical memory versus modern identity. This specific transition highlights how the act of naming functions as a powerful tool for asserting cultural control over shared public spaces.

The Power of Linguistic Labels

Language serves as the primary architecture for how we construct our social reality and personal identity. When we assign a name to an object, a place, or a person, we are not merely choosing a sound or a label. We are actively shaping the way that others perceive the inherent value and history of that subject. This process of onomastic framing allows dominant groups to impose their specific values onto the collective consciousness of a society. Much like a brand choosing a name to influence consumer trust, governments use names to signal political allegiance or cultural shifts. If a group controls the naming process, they effectively control the narrative of who belongs and who remains an outsider in that space.

Key term: Onomastic framing — the process of assigning names to people or places to shape social perceptions and historical narratives.

Ethical Dimensions of Identity

Beyond geography, the ethics of naming become intensely personal when we consider how individuals choose their own identifiers. The act of self-identification is a fundamental human right that allows people to reclaim agency over their own life stories. When an institution forces a name upon someone that contradicts their internal sense of self, it creates a form of linguistic violence. This tension mirrors the economic concept of a monopoly, where one entity dictates the terms of exchange for everyone else involved. By denying someone the right to name themselves, the institution treats the person as a static product rather than a living, evolving human being. True ethical naming requires a balance between the needs of the community and the rights of the individual to define their own existence.

Ethical naming practices often rely on three core principles that ensure respect and clarity for all participants involved in the process:

• Reciprocity ensures that all parties involved in an interaction agree on the terms of address to maintain mutual respect.
• Authenticity requires that the chosen name reflects the true identity or historical reality rather than an imposed label.
• Inclusivity demands that the naming system remains flexible enough to accommodate diverse identities without creating social barriers for others.

Evaluating Naming Conflicts

When we analyze naming disputes, we can compare how different approaches impact social cohesion and individual dignity in public settings.

This table demonstrates that the most ethical outcomes arise when participants move away from imposition toward empowerment. When we allow for negotiation, we create a space where identity is not a zero-sum game of power. Instead, naming becomes a collaborative effort that strengthens the social fabric rather than tearing it apart. We must recognize that language is a dynamic tool that evolves alongside our understanding of human rights and dignity. By choosing our words with care, we contribute to a more equitable environment where everyone has the power to define their own place in the world. This approach builds on the concept of linguistic agency introduced in Station 12, where we explored how media shapes our vocabulary choices.

Ethical naming functions as a critical act of justice that restores individual agency and historical truth to the people who define their own identities.

But this model of individual autonomy faces significant friction when local traditions or institutional naming policies demand strict adherence to historical or social norms.
